A 28-year-old woman has filed a complaint against her husband and in-laws in Ahmedabad’s Bapunagar, alleging dowry harassment, physical assault and demands for ₹20 lakh and a new house. She also alleged that her in-laws took her salary and denied her money for household expenses.

The woman, who has been living with her parents in Asarwa, alleged that the harassment continued even after a settlement at the Shahibaug Women’s Police Station in August 2025. She claimed that her in-laws assaulted her again and forced her out of the matrimonial home within a week of the settlement.

Harassment Over Household Work and Salary

The woman married a Bapunagar resident in 2022 according to customary social and religious practices. The couple have a two-year-old son.

According to her complaint, her in-laws treated her well for the first three months of the marriage before her mother-in-law, father-in-law and sister-in-law began taunting and harassing her over household chores.

She alleged that they made her repeat the same work and sometimes denied her food. When she raised the issue with her husband, he allegedly sided with his parents and sister, abused her and assaulted her. She further alleged that her in-laws took her salary from her job but did not give her any money for household expenses. They also restricted her from visiting or calling her parental home and assaulted her over suspicions about her conduct.

₹20 Lakh and New House Demanded, Woman Alleges

The complaint states that the husband and his family repeatedly pressured the woman to bring ₹20 lakh in cash and a new house from her parents, claiming that the amount demanded at the time of marriage had not been paid in full. She also alleged that her husband and in-laws did not pay for hospital treatment or medicines when she gave birth to their son.

Settlement Failed to End Alleged Abuse

On July 26, 2025, the woman was allegedly assaulted and thrown out of her matrimonial home. She subsequently submitted an application at the Shahibaug Women’s Police Station.

The couple and their families reached a settlement on August 13, 2025, following which she returned to her in-laws’ home in Bapunagar. However, the woman alleged that the harassment over dowry and household work resumed within about a week, and she was forced to leave the house again.

She has now lodged a complaint at Bapunagar Police Station against her husband and other members of her in-laws’ family.
