A 67-year-old doctor running a clinic in Ahmedabad’s Isanpur area allegedly lost ₹4.51 lakh after a cyber fraudster posing as a gas service representative threatened to disconnect his supply over a supposedly unpaid bill. The accused allegedly sent a malicious APK file through WhatsApp and obtained the doctor’s Bank of Baroda debit card details, enabling multiple unauthorised transactions.

Fake Adani Gas Notice Used to Lure Doctor

According to the complaint, Prakashbhai Darji, who lives at Prerna Tenament on Isanpur-Vatva Road and runs a clinic in Isanpur, was at home on the morning of October 4, 2026, when he received a WhatsApp call from an unknown number.

The caller claimed that his Adani Gas bill was overdue and threatened to disconnect the supply if he failed to pay. The fraudster also warned that he would be unable to obtain a gas connection for the next three months.

The caller then sent a notice bearing the Adani Gas logo along with an APK file, claiming it was required to pay the bill.

Doctor’s Phone Freezes After Opening APK File

Darji had no outstanding gas bill but downloaded the application after the caller told him that ₹13 remained unpaid. The caller instructed him to keep the call active while entering his details.

The doctor opened the application and entered his gas service number and Bank of Baroda debit card details. His mobile phone then became unresponsive and remained frozen for around one-and-a-half to two hours.

Suspecting fraud, Darji went to an ATM and checked his account’s transaction history. He discovered that multiple transactions had resulted in ₹4.51 lakh being debited from his account.

Narol Police Launch Investigation

The doctor initially reported the incident through the cybercrime helpline 1930. Narol police later registered a case under the applicable provisions of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and began investigating the alleged cyber fraud.
