No Entry to Schools for Students Without Licence or Helmet, says Ahmedabad DEO

Students in Ahmedabad who ride to school without a valid driving licence or helmet will now be denied entry, following a strict directive issued by the District Education Officer (DEO). The move comes amid growing concern over road accidents involving minors and aims to strengthen road safety on school campuses.

Schools Directed to Enforce Strict Vehicle Rules

The Ahmedabad DEO has instructed all government, grant-in-aid and private secondary and higher secondary schools to stop students from entering school premises if they arrive on two-wheelers without a valid driving licence or without wearing a helmet.

School authorities have also been asked to counsel parents and ensure that underage students do not commute to school on motor vehicles in violation of traffic rules.

The order is part of a wider effort to improve road safety and prevent accidents involving school-going children.

Parents and Schools to Share Responsibility

Under the new guidelines, schools have been directed to identify students who bring two-wheelers despite being ineligible to drive. Parents will be informed and advised against allowing their children to use vehicles without the required licence.

The DEO has stressed that schools cannot ignore such violations and must take proactive steps to ensure compliance. Institutions have also been asked to spread awareness about safe driving practices among students.

Surprise Inspections to Be Conducted

The education department, in coordination with the Regional Transport Office (RTO), is expected to carry out surprise inspections at schools to check whether students are complying with the rules.

Officials will verify driving licences and helmet usage. Students found riding two-wheelers without a valid licence, including those using electric scooters covered under licensing norms, may face action under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Part of Gujarat's Wider Road Safety Drive

The latest directive follows a broader push across Gujarat to curb underage driving. Earlier this month, school management bodies across the state asked educational institutions to prohibit students below the legal driving age from bringing two-wheelers to school after several fatal road accidents involving minors.

The state government has also intensified enforcement of helmet rules through a statewide road safety campaign, signalling a stricter approach towards traffic violations and rider safety.

The DEO's latest order places the responsibility on both schools and parents to ensure that students follow traffic laws, with authorities hoping the measure will reduce accidents and promote safer commuting among schoolchildren.
