The accused, identified as Sushil Birmanand Verma, was intercepted following a tip-off received by the Crime Branch around noon. According to the information received by the police, a man carrying a consignment of charas was travelling towards Mumbai and was expected to pass near the railway overbridge towards Naroda’s Sutar factory between 2.30 pm and 3 pm.
DCB Team Intercepts Accused Following Tip-Off
A team of Crime Branch personnel conducted the operation and positioned itself near Naroda GIDC Gate No. 3. Officers subsequently intercepted a man matching the description provided by the informant.
During the search, the officers allegedly found a black, sticky substance with a distinctive smell inside a parcel concealed in the accused’s bag. An officer from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) examined the substance and gave a preliminary opinion that it was charas.
A digital weighing scale was brought to the spot, where the substance was found to weigh 1.915 kg, excluding the packaging. Its estimated value was calculated at ₹4.78 lakh, based on a rate of ₹2.5 lakh per kg.
Mobile Phone, Cash and Other Items Seized
Apart from the suspected contraband, police seized a Nokia keypad mobile phone valued at ₹500, ₹1,300 in cash, an Aadhaar card and a bag. The total value of the seized items, including the suspected charas, was estimated at ₹4.80 lakh.
Accused Allegedly Collected Parcel in Jammu
During questioning, Verma allegedly told investigators that a Mumbai-based person identified as Vaibhav Rahe had arranged his train ticket from Bandra to Jammu. He allegedly claimed that an unidentified person known to Rahe handed him the parcel at a bus station in Jammu.
According to the police, the consignment was intended to be delivered to Rahe in Mumbai. Investigators are probing the alleged supply chain and the role of the Mumbai-based contact.
A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is under way to establish the source of the contraband and identify others allegedly involved in its procurement and transportation.
