Ahead of Navratri, several posts and reels offering “rent-a-partner” services for Garba have surfaced across social media platforms, raising concerns over possible cyber fraud. The posts claim to provide Garba partners for prices ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹10,000, prompting the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell to launch an investigation and warn people against falling for such offers.
Silver, Gold And Platinum Packages Advertised
Multiple posts and reels being shared on Instagram and Facebook advertise different “rent-a-partner” packages, including Silver, Gold and Platinum options.
The offers reportedly include playing Garba with a partner for two hours or the entire night, matching outfits, photographs and shooting reels.
According to the source, several youths in Gujarat have already fallen victim to such posts and lost lakhs of rupees.
Police Suspect Honeytraps And Malicious Links
The posts have raised suspicion that fraudsters could be using the offers as part of a cybercrime operation. The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell has warned that such scams could involve honeytraps or financial extortion.
Fraudsters may send malicious APK files or viral links while claiming they contain details of the Garba partner. Clicking on such links could allow them to hack phones and steal money, according to the warning.
There is also a possibility of people being trapped through a planned honeytrap after being promised a partner for Garba.
Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell Launches Investigation
Taking the matter seriously, the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell has started an investigation through its Social Media Cell.
DCP Lavina Sinha of the Cyber Crime Cell said that advertisements claiming “partners available for rent” for Garba are a form of cybercrime.
The police have collected details of the social media posts and started investigating the matter. They have also obtained crucial leads regarding the gang allegedly operating the cyber fraud.
The Cyber Crime Cell has urged people to remain cautious when encountering such “rent-a-partner” offers on social media.
