Ahmedabad Crime Branch Arrests Man Wanted in 2023 Morena Massacre That Left Six of a Family Dead

Ramusingh Tomar, carrying a reward of ₹30,000, was traced to a warehouse in Gurugram after allegedly living under a concealed identity in four states; he is to be handed over to Madhya Pradesh Police

The Detection of Ahmedabad Crime Branch has apprehended a 37-year-old man carrying a reward of ₹30,000 in connection with the killing of six members of a family during a land dispute in Lepa village of Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district in May 2023. The accused, Ramusingh Dhirasingh Tomar, had allegedly been evading arrest by concealing his identity and moving between Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana, police said.

Tomar was traced to a warehouse in the Gopalpur GIDC area of Gurugram, Haryana, where he had reportedly been working for about a year. The Crime Branch team apprehended him after keeping watch on Garhi-Harsaru Road in the industrial area, following intelligence about his whereabouts.

According to Crime Branch official, Tomar was brought to Ahmedabad for questioning and verification of his identity and alleged involvement in the case. Police subsequently confirmed that he was wanted in connection with Crime Register registered at Sihoniya police station in Morena district. Further proceedings have been initiated to hand him over to the Madhya Pradesh police for investigation.

Six killed in alleged revenge attack over land dispute

The case relates to a shooting in Lepa village in May 2023, when members of one family were allegedly attacked by a rival group amid a longstanding land dispute. Six people including three men and three women were killed in the firing, according to the police.

The FIR in the case was registered against nine accused under Sections of the Indian Penal Code, along with Sections of the Arms Act. The provisions relate to murder, attempt to murder, assault, rioting, criminal intimidation and offences involving firearms, among others.

Police said the dispute had its roots in an earlier incident in 2013, when Birbhansingh Munsisingh Tomar and Shobharansingh Munsisingh Tomar, described as the uncle and elder uncle of the accused Ramusingh Tomar, were allegedly murdered in connection with the same land dispute. Ranjitsingh Munnesingh Tomar and his family members were allegedly involved in those killings, according to the Crime Branch official

The police said Ramusingh Tomar and members of his family had allegedly been seeking an opportunity to take revenge for the 2013 killings. In May 2023, members of Ranjitsingh Tomar’s family had gathered in Lepa village for a wedding in the family when the shooting took place.

The attackers allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on the family members, killing six people. Following the incident, the accused fled, prompting a search involving the Madhya Pradesh police.

SIT formed; ₹30,000 reward announced

A Special Investigation Team was constituted by the Superintendent of Police of Morena district to trace the accused. While some of those named in the case were arrested, others remained absconding.

The police subsequently circulated details of the wanted accused and announced a reward of ₹30,000 for information leading to the arrest of Ramusingh Tomar. The reward was announced by the Inspector General of Police of the Chambal zone in Madhya Pradesh.

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch initiated a parallel effort to trace the accused after receiving information that he was working at a warehouse in Gurugram. A team travelled to Haryana and conducted surveillance in the Gopalpur GIDC area before apprehending him.

Allegedly moved between four states to evade arrest

During questioning, Tomar allegedly disclosed that he had lived at various locations in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Haryana after the 2023 incident, concealing his identity to avoid detection. He reportedly earned a living by working as a security guard and taking up casual labour.

For approximately a year before his apprehension, he had been employed at a warehouse in the Gurugram industrial area, the police said.

Tomar is a native of Lepa Bhidosa village in Morena district and was reportedly staying at a house belonging to Karamvir Saini in Garhi village, under the jurisdiction of Sector 10/A police station in Gurugram.

Another criminal case in Madhya Pradesh

The Crime Branch also records a previous criminal case against Tomar in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district. Gormi police station had registered Crime Register against him under Sections of the Indian Penal Code, relating to attempt to murder, wrongful restraint and rioting-related offences.

The Crime Branch said the accused would be handed over to Sihoniya police station in Morena district for further legal proceedings in the six-murder case. His alleged role in the 2023 killings remains subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
