A builder from Ahmedabad’s Shah Alam, 50, area died by suicide at his home on 10 October 2026, allegedly after facing a ₹2 crore demand over a land deal, threats and harassment by moneylenders.
Dani Limda police have registered a case against four accused, including landowner Dilawarkhan Umarkhan Pathan, on charges of abetment to suicide and under the Gujarat Money-Lending Act. The case follows a complaint filed by the deceased’s son, Abdulhamid Arif Qureshi.
Friend Allegedly Demanded Extra ₹2 Crore for Land Papers
Arif Qureshi, who lived in Kirti Kunj Society in Shah Alam and worked in building construction, purchased 275 square yards of land at Patel’s Maidan near Sikandar Market in Dani Limda village from his friend Dilawarkhan in September 2022. He paid ₹1,64,85,000 for the property and later purchased additional land in installments.
According to the complaint, Dilawarkhan executed powers of attorney for around 1,500 square yards but allegedly refused to complete the paperwork for another 700 square yards, despite receiving payment. As land prices increased, he allegedly demanded an additional ₹2 crore to transfer the remaining land rights.
Dilawarkhan allegedly threatened to have a flat demolished if Qureshi failed to pay. He also reportedly called Qureshi to his office repeatedly, assaulted him and humiliated him.
Loans at High Interest Rates Led to Further Demands
To escape the alleged harassment, Qureshi approached his acquaintance Firozkhan Sultankhan, a resident of Jyoti Park in Shah Alam, for financial help. Firozkhan arranged a loan of ₹20 lakh through his son, Parvezkhan, at an alleged interest rate of 30%. Qureshi had reportedly repaid the ₹20 lakh, including interest, by 2025. However, Parvezkhan and Firozkhan allegedly continued visiting his home and demanding more money.
Parvezkhan also allegedly arranged a loan of ₹15 lakh through his maternal uncle, Hakimkhan Vasirkhan Pathan, a resident of Rakhial. The loan reportedly required Qureshi to pay ₹15,000 in interest every day.
The complaint also lists the following alleged incidents:
- On September 23, 2026, Parvezkhan allegedly followed Qureshi and his son near the Riverfront, stopped them on the road and threatened to kill them.
- Around two months before Qureshi’s death, Parvezkhan and Hakimkhan allegedly threatened the women in his family, confined them inside the house and locked the door from outside.
Dani Limda Police Register Case Against Four Accused
According to the complaint, Qureshi died by suicide at his home at around 3 pm on October 10, 2026, after allegedly facing continued physical and mental harassment.
His son subsequently approached Dani Limda police, naming four people, including the landowner and those allegedly involved in moneylending and recovery demands.
Police have registered a case under provisions relating to abetment to suicide and the Gujarat Money-Lending Act. An investigation into the allegations is under way.
