A 23-year-old BMW driver has been arrested after his car allegedly rammed into a scooter, an auto-rickshaw and another car on Ahmedabad’s SG Highway, leaving three people injured. Police have sent his blood sample for testing following allegations that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
The accused, Jaydeepsinh Zala, a resident of Sanand, was allegedly trying to flee after the October 22 accident when people at the spot caught him and his friend, Ruturaj, who was travelling with him. The occupants were subsequently handed over to the police.
The SG-2 Traffic Police said prohibition charges would be added if the blood test confirms alcohol consumption.
BMW Allegedly Hits Scooter From Behind
According to the FIR, the accident occurred around 9 am near the AMTS bus stand at the cut leading towards Shelby Hospital, before the Karnavati intersection.
Kanaiyalal Kumawat, 27, was riding his Honda Activa with his younger brother, Mukeshkumar Kumawat, 25, travelling as a pillion passenger when the BMW allegedly hit their scooter from behind. The impact threw both brothers onto the road.
The BMW allegedly then struck an auto-rickshaw travelling ahead, injuring a passenger’s leg, before colliding with another car.
Bystanders Catch Driver As He Tries To Flee
After the crash, the BMW driver allegedly attempted to flee the scene. However, people present at the spot caught the car’s occupants, contacted the police and handed them over to the authorities.
The injured brothers were taken to Sola Civil Hospital in a 108 ambulance. They received outpatient treatment and were subsequently discharged.
Blood Test Results To Determine Further Charges
Police arrested Zala and collected his blood sample for testing to establish whether he had consumed alcohol before driving.
“A case has been registered in the matter, and we have sent the samples for testing. If the results are positive, prohibition sections will be added,” said R A Patel, inspector at the SG-2 Traffic Police Station.
According to police, Zala’s father runs an electrical shop where the accused also works. Zala had purchased the BMW as a second-hand vehicle, police said.
The investigation is ongoing, with police awaiting the blood test results to determine whether additional charges are warranted.
