A 57-year-old man allegedly lost ₹73,000 after a stranger swapped his debit card at a Canara Bank ATM in Ahmedabad’s Isanpur area. The accused allegedly persuaded the man to reinsert his card by claiming that his transaction was incomplete, watched him enter his PIN and handed him a dummy card. Isanpur Police have registered a case and are examining CCTV footage to trace the suspect.

Fraudster Allegedly Swaps Debit Card at ATM

Rakeshbhai Indravadan Bhavsar, a 57-year-old Isanpur resident employed at Cargo Motors in Gandhinagar, visited the Canara Bank ATM near Govindwadi at around 8.15 pm on October 26 to withdraw cash.

After withdrawing ₹2,000, Bhavsar was preparing to leave when an unidentified man standing nearby called him back. The stranger allegedly claimed that the transaction had not been completed and advised him to insert his card again to prevent possible misuse of his bank account.

When Bhavsar followed the instructions, the man allegedly distracted him, observed his PIN and secretly exchanged his debit card for a similar-looking dummy card.

₹73,000 Withdrawn Before Victim Could React

Bhavsar soon received a mobile alert showing a ₹10,000 debit from his account. He immediately contacted his son, Jay, for help. Before his son could arrive, further transaction alerts came in, showing that a total of ₹73,000 had been withdrawn.

As the incident occurred late at night, Bhavsar visited the bank the following day to check the transactions. He then discovered that his debit card had been swapped and that money had been withdrawn by an unidentified person.

Isanpur Police Examine CCTV Footage

Bhavsar subsequently lodged a complaint at Isanpur Police Station. Police have registered a cheating case against an unidentified person and are examining CCTV footage from the ATM and surrounding area to identify and trace the accused.
