An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Ahmedabad Police Headquarters has been accused of deliberately helping a rape case prisoner escape while he was supposed to escort him from Civil Hospital to Sabarmati Central Jail. Instead of taking the accused back to jail, ASI Rajesh Dayaram allegedly took him to Vastral and allowed him to flee near Nirant Cross Road. He later reportedly misled the police control room by claiming that the prisoner had escaped during a traffic jam near Dudheshwar Circle.

The Ramol Police have registered a case against the ASI and the escaped prisoner, Raju alias Gopal Thakkar, and launched an investigation.

Prisoner Taken to Civil Hospital for Treatment

According to the complaint filed by PI B.D. Kotada, posted at Shahibaug Main Police Headquarters, Thakkar was lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail in connection with a rape case registered at Naroda Police Station.

On October 27, 2026, he was brought from Sabarmati Jail under police escort for a court hearing. However, his health deteriorated, following which he was shifted to Civil Hospital for treatment.

As he required further medical attention, he remained under police guard until his treatment was completed. After being discharged two days later, on October 29, he was supposed to be escorted back to Sabarmati Central Jail.

ASI Allegedly Took Accused to Vastral

Instead of following the procedure, ASI Rajesh Dayaram allegedly claimed that Thakkar was his relative, kept the other police personnel away and took him alone in an auto-rickshaw.

Investigators found that the ASI took the prisoner towards Vastral rather than Sabarmati Central Jail and allegedly allowed him to escape near Nirant Cross Road.

False Escape Story Reportedly Given to Control Room

The ASI allegedly took advantage of a traffic jam near Dudheshwar Circle to create a false account of the escape. He contacted the police control room and claimed that Thakkar had fled during the traffic congestion.

However, an investigation by the Madhavpura and Ramol Police revealed that the prisoner had not escaped at Dudheshwar Circle. Instead, the ASI had allegedly taken him towards Vastral and helped him flee.

Following the findings, the Ramol Police registered a case against ASI Rajesh Dayaram and Raju alias Gopal Thakkar. Further investigation is underway.
