After Sugar, Lemon Prices Soar to ₹240–260 Per Kg in Ahmedabad

About a fortnight ago, lemons were selling for around ₹120 per kg in the city’s retail markets. The sharp increase has prompted consumers to buy lemons by the piece instead of by weight.

Lemon prices generally rise during summer due to higher demand. However, the sharp increase during the monsoon has surprised both consumers and traders.

Retail Lemon Prices Double in Just 15 Days

Lemons that were available at around ₹120 per kg two weeks ago are now being sold at ₹240–260 per kg in Ahmedabad’s retail markets. The increase has significantly raised the cost of an item commonly used in cooking and beverages.

Wholesale Rates Rise Sharply

Data from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Market Yard shows that on August 22, the wholesale price of lemons ranged between ₹10 and ₹55 per kg. The rate has now increased to ₹80–160 per kg.

During this period, the market yard received around 6,710 quintals of lemons, compared with 10,608 quintals during the corresponding period in 2025. This represents a decline of 3,898 quintals in arrivals.

Supply Declines From Key Producing Regions

According to market experts and agricultural specialists, lemon production in the regions supplying Ahmedabad has largely been limited to local requirements. Much of the produce is being consumed within those markets, leaving less supply for Ahmedabad.

Heat Damages Crop, Demand Rises

Experts said prolonged heat caused lemons to turn yellow and fall from trees, affecting overall arrivals. At the same time, a delay in rainfall has created conditions similar to summer, increasing consumption and demand for lemons.

The combination of lower arrivals and increased demand has contributed to the rapid rise in lemon prices in Ahmedabad.
