35,273 Ganesh Idols Immersed Across 46 Tanks At 37 Ahmedabad Locations

More than 35,273 Ganesh idols were immersed across 46 temporary tanks at 37 locations in Ahmedabad following the conclusion of Ganeshotsav, which began on September 15.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Solid Waste Department had arranged immersion facilities across the city, including at the Sabarmati Riverfront, to accommodate idols brought from homes as well as public Ganesh pandals.

Around 180 public locations across Ahmedabad had hosted large and medium-sized Ganesh idols during the festival.

AMC Arranged Immersion Tanks Amid Pollution Concerns

The immersion arrangements were made in view of restrictions on immersing Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols in rivers and lakes because of concerns over water pollution from PoP and idol paints.

To accommodate religious practices while complying with the restrictions, the AMC set up immersion tanks at multiple locations. Idols were immersed in these tanks throughout Ganeshotsav, after which the remnants were collected and processed separately.

The civic body said the collection and management of idol remnants were carried out while keeping religious sentiments in mind.

133 Vehicles Deployed For Immersion Operations

The AMC deployed 133 vehicles, including Hydra cranes, to transport idols to the immersion tanks and manage the remnants after immersion.

A total of 31 JCBs and Bobcats, along with 80 trucks, were also deployed at various immersion sites to handle large idols and waste generated during the process.

6,811 Kg Of Religious Material Sent For Recycling

Religious materials used during worship at Ganesh pandals and collected from immersion tanks were handled separately.

Across all seven AMC zones, 6,811 kg of religious material has been collected and sent for recycling.
