A 21-year-old delivery worker has been arrested in Ahmedabad's Ramol area for allegedly stalking a minor schoolgirl and pressuring her to speak to him and remain in contact, police said.
The accused, identified as Samir Sheikh, allegedly followed the girl on an Activa while she travelled to and from school for four to five days, according to the complaint.
Girl Alerts Parents After Repeated Encounters
Police said Sheikh allegedly stopped the girl during the encounters, gave her his mobile number and pressured her to communicate with him and stay in contact.
Concerned by the repeated incidents, the girl told her parents about the alleged harassment.
Her family subsequently accompanied her while she travelled to school and kept watch along her regular route.
During one such journey, the girl allegedly spotted Sheikh and identified him to her family. They immediately alerted the police control room by dialling 112.
A police team reached the spot and detained Sheikh, following which he was arrested, police said.
Accused Worked At Warehouse On Girl's Route
During the investigation, police learnt that Sheikh had been working as a Blinkit delivery worker at a warehouse located along the route used by the girl to travel to school.
Police said he had been working at the warehouse for around six months.
Officials also found that Sheikh was married.
POCSO Case Registered
A case has been registered at Ramol Police Station under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other applicable laws.
Police are investigating the allegations of stalking and harassment and are also examining how the accused became familiar with the girl's daily routine.
The investigation will further look into whether Sheikh had allegedly approached or followed the girl on any other occasions and whether there were any earlier incidents that had not been reported.
