AHMEDABAD — Eleven years after the nation launched its flagship Digital India initiative, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) continues to manage more than one lakh legacy files manually on paper. In a bid to overhaul its record-keeping system and streamline citizen services, the civic body has approved a ₹1 crore project to scan and digitise these critical records, which include decades-old building plans and Building Use (BU) permissions.

Under the current system, residents seeking old property documents or structural approvals are forced to visit AMC offices in person. Bureaucratic delays frequently follow as municipal staff manually sift through dusty physical archives. Once digitised, the entire repository will shift online, allowing citizens to request documents, pay required fees, and download verified files directly from their homes.

Single Click Access to BU Permissions and Structural Maps

The digitisation project aims to completely remove manual bottlenecks in civic record retrieval. Key highlights of the initiative include:

  • Massive Archive Conversion: Over 100,000 legacy paper files containing residential and commercial building maps, BU permits, and official property documents will be scanned.
  • Online Citizen Portal: Residents will no longer need to navigate civic offices physically. They can submit applications online, pay prescribed fees, and download structural documents digitally.
  • Streamlined Counter Service: Citizens preferring over-the-counter retrieval at AMC offices will also benefit from instant electronic processing.

Hitendra Parmar, Chairman of the e-Governance, Electrical and Material Programme Committee, confirmed the initiative, stating that centralising the record room's massive paper archives into an online database will make critical civic documents easily accessible to the public.

Contract Awarded to Gujarat Infotech Pending Final Approval

The proposal to award the scanning and digitisation contract to Gujarat Infotech Limited has been cleared by the e-Governance, Electrical and Material Programme Committee. The proposal now awaits final approval from the AMC Standing Committee before execution begins.

In a separate decision, the committee approved a ₹10.53 crore expenditure for decorative lighting along the iconic road stretch from Visat Circle to Tapovan Circle. The beautification project involves erecting approximately 1,320 poles and installing 1,570 decorative lights to elevate the corridor's visual appeal.
