8 killed after sudden rise in river water level in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada

At least eight people, including seven women, drowned after the water level in the Venkatapura River rose suddenly while they were engaged in collecting shells in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district on Sunday.
The incident took place in the Shirali-Tattihakkal area of Bhatkal taluka.
According to officials, 14 locals had entered the river as part of their traditional occupation of collecting shells, a common source of livelihood for families living near the coast and riverbanks.
During the activity, the river’s water level and flow reportedly increased suddenly, sweeping several people away in the strong current, resulting in the death of 8 persons, including 7 women.
Authorities said a woman and a man are still reported missing, while rescue teams and local authorities have launched an extensive search operation in the river to trace them.
Further details were awaited.
